Many veterans face chronic mental health challenges such as treatment-resistant depression and PTSD, for which conventional treatments may fall short. TMS offers a noninvasive, side-effect–friendly alternative that has been increasingly explored within veteran populations. Preliminary findings and VA-supported research suggest TMS — including deep and accelerated protocols — can reduce depressive symptoms, lessen PTSD burden, and improve overall functioning more sustainably than placebo alone. While TMS is not a guaranteed solution and not yet standard of care in all VA settings, for veterans who have not responded well to medications or psychotherapy, TMS may represent a meaningful path forward under careful monitoring and within a comprehensive treatment plan.
